A Welcome Mat

A Field Glossary

Every world has its first words. The ones below belong to ours — some borrowed, some made, all of them doors. You don’t need any of them to begin; they will find you as the work does.

Words for the practice

Invitation — The oldest word we have, and the heart of the craft. A guide does not instruct; a guide offers an invitation — a doorway into noticing — and what you do with it is entirely, gloriously yours.Explore Relational Forest Therapy · The Book

Sit spot — A place you return to, in every weather and season, until it stops being scenery and starts being an acquaintance. Every guide keeps one; most will tell you it keeps them.Explore The Book

The walk — Slower than you expect. A guided sequence of invitations, unhurried on purpose, in which very little happens and, often, everything does.Explore Relational Forest Therapy · The Science

Council — How we speak and listen in circle: one voice at a time, from the heart, without fixing or advising. Harder than it sounds; softer than you fear.Explore Relational Forest Therapy

The more-than-human world — A phrase from the philosopher David Abram for everything alive and present beyond the human — forest, river, raven, stone — named this way to remember that we are members of that world, not visitors.Explore A Living System · The Science

Threshold — A crossing place; the moment before is different from the moment after. The Forest Threshold is our name for the doorway into all of this — the crossing where the forest’s invitations begin.Explore The Forest Threshold

The five movements — Connect, Discover, Embody, Remember, Shine: the arc of a threshold crossing, from arrival in relationship to letting what was kindled be seen.Explore The Forest Threshold

Wayfinding — The art of choosing your path when more than one calls. We take it seriously: if you are unsure where to begin, that is not a problem to solve alone — it is a conversation we would welcome.Explore The Academies · Open calls

Words for the paths

The paths — The five paths that lead from the source: guide certification, Nature as Medicine, the Academy of Place, the Alchemy of Pilgrimage, and Applied Forest Therapy. Paths, because each is walked at your own pace, and no two cross the land the same way.Explore The Academies

Academy — We use the old sense: not an institution but a company of people practicing and learning together, over years, with care.Explore The Academies

Practicum — The mentored season of practice — real walks, on real land, with real people — where training becomes craft.Explore Practicum

Alchemy of Pilgrimage — The Opus Academy’s path of transformation through journeying: creative work, practice, and travel that change the traveler. Practitioners call it Alchimage — a word you’ll earn soon enough.Explore Opus Academy

Atelier — The working studio of the Alchemy of Pilgrimage: where the journey’s materials become the journey’s art.Explore Opus Academy

Company — What we call the group that travels a pilgrimage together: people who did not choose each other but found themselves on the same road — like a case of found treasures, composed by chance into something whole. Not meant to be permanent; meant to be valued while it lasts. Within the work, such a group calls itself an assemblage.Explore Opus Academy

Words for the people

Guide — One who walks ahead only far enough to hold a door open. The forest does the rest.Explore Relational Forest Therapy · Find a guide

Mentor — A practicing guide who accompanies your practicum season — someone who knows your name, your land, and your growing edge.Explore Practicum

The admissions circle — The people who read every application. Not gatekeepers; hosts, composing each circle with intention.Explore Introduce Yourself

Circle — How we gather, whatever the occasion. The shape is the teaching: no head of the table, because there is no table.Explore Relational Forest Therapy
